My Top 10 Recordings - no. 8: Archerich/Bach
During my undergraduate years in Freiburg, Germany, I had a student subscription to a chamber music series featuring Martha Argerich relatively regularly. I heard her play in duo concerts, but also in solo recitals.
The only female pianist I got to see on this series, she was one of my role models, my guiding light. In the circuit of concertizing artists there were, and still are way too few female pianists.
When I decided to move to America to study with John Perry, it was this album that built the sound track to my departure from Germany and to my first days in Los Angeles.
It was Martha Argerich’s abandon in her pianism, her fun and dynamic approach especially to the a minor English Suite, where I found my bearings and my focus in a time of change in my life.
